Simply Sicily – hosted by Renato di Stefano is an offer you can’t refuse. Staying at an exclusive seafront villa with private swimming pool situated in the beautiful seaside resort of Marina di Modica on the southern coast of Sicily, discover ancient towns, Roman ruins, a rumbling stratovolcano and the delectable layer-cake of Sicilian culinary influences in two amazing weeks. Offering an alluring marriage of food and culture, our 13-day ‘Simply Sicily’ is a culinary tour with a difference. Showcasing Italian cuisine, not only will you return with lots of culinary secrets and new-found skills that can be employed in the kitchen back home, you’ll enjoy the beauty of Sicily.
Indeed, the word ‘bedda’ is Sicilian for ‘beautiful’, a word that aptly describes the little boot of Italy. You won’t be the first to visit. Richard the Lionheart and Eleanor of Aquitane were here a fair few years back. Mario Puzo’s Vito Corleone scared a few folks off back in the 70s with the Pacino/Brando family blockbuster, but folk can’t get enough of Sicily, an island that is black and white and a million shades of grey. The enchanting land where Archimedes taught, and St Paul preached was a Greek colony, a Roman province, an Arab Emirate and a Norman kingdom. The legacy of Sicily’s awesomely chequered past is a treasure chest of riches – art, archaeology and folklore combined with amazing scenery under the watchful eye of smouldering Mt Etna.
Check out Mt Etna and its perfect 10,000ft Vulcan cone and Stromboli. UNESCO has been piling the accolades on Sicily and we’ll discover the magic at the Valley of the Temples, the baroque city of Scicli and Necropolis of Pantalica. At erstwhile capital of Byzantine Sicily in the 9th century, Taormina is an almost perfectly preserved medieval town. Visiting the awesome Greek theatre, it’s easy to see this place might have been the blueprint for the modern-day Gold Class experience! And at Siracusa, the most important city of Magna Greci, visit the archaeological park with its ancient Greek theatre, Roman amphitheatre and Paradise Quarry with the ear of Diogenes famed for its acoustic effects.
The policing exploits of Inspector Montalbano, lead character on the hit Sicilian television series of the same name are scattered throughout Sicily including at Punta Secca and Scicli. Visits are made here, as well as to the oldest chocolate factory in Sicily, a winery on Mt Etna and Villa del Casale, an ancient Roman villa famed for its spectacular mosaic floors.
After 13 blissful days lapping up a rich and heady mix of Sicilian culture, cuisine, camaraderie and colour, you’ll feel like Robert de Niro’s waiting, and you’re talking Italian.
