Renew your passport by 1 July to SAVE!
7 Jun 2024
Starting July 1, Australians will face an additional $50 fee for new or renewed passports, raising the total cost to nearly $400, making it one of the priciest in the world. To accommodate urgent needs, two expedited options are now available if your passport is close to expiring or has less than the six-month validity required by many countries:
- Fast Track Service: For an extra $100 on top of the standard fee, your passport will be processed within five business days.
- Priority Service: For an additional $252 on top of the standard fee, your passport processing time will be cut to just two business days.
These options are in contrast to the Australian Passport Office's standard processing time of a minimum of six weeks for a new passport or renewal at the regular rate of $396.
Australia’s NEW “R” Series Passports:
The new R series passports, distinguished by the first letter in the individual passport number, boast advanced security features over the previous P series launched in 2014. These innovations include responses to touch, movement, ultraviolet, and infrared light.
Key features of the R series passports include:
- Photo Page: Made from a high-security, layered plastic and laser-engraved. The main photo is black and white, while it appears in colour on the adjacent ‘Observations’ page.
- Embedded Security: A raised map of Australia is embedded in the lower-left corner of the main photo page, and a radio antenna for the ePassport chip is visible on the far right.
- Cover Design: The front cover has a more sophisticated design compared to the P series. The back cover features two embossed kangaroos in an Indigenous design, with inside pages highlighting Australia’s natural landscapes.
- Hidden Features: The wattle design on the ‘security features’ page changes colour when viewed from different angles. Under ultraviolet light, red and white wattle images appear on the inside front cover beneath the Governor-General’s message.
