An archipelago of 83 islands, most of Vanuatu’s islands are mountainous and volcanic in origin. With seven active volcanos on land and two underwater, the most popular one to visit is the world’s most accessible volcano, Mount Yasur on the island of Tanna. Walk to the rim and peer into the fiery crater or visit it at night-time when the red glow of erupting ash and rocks looks particularly spectacular against the darkened sky.
Much of Vanuatu’s charm lies in its natural beauty with pristine beaches to laze about on; jungle-covered volcanic peaks to explore; warm, clear waters to swim, snorkel and dive in, marvelling at spectacular shipwrecks and colourful coral reefs. Enjoy deep-sea fishing, admire cascading waterfalls, kayak, paraglide or abseil. Bounce around on an off-road buggy tour or get in amongst it with the friendly locals at the Vila Market, where you can purchase mouth-watering tropical fruits and dine on local delicacies.
