Home to some of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, the Middle East offers a beguiling blend of diverse cultures, scenery and attractions.
The Middle East is an often misunderstood but fascinating mix of cultures that is greatly varied and diverse. Reflecting the dichotomy between ancient and modern, it blends traditional values with contemporary ideas. Searing hot deserts sit nearby clear and refreshing beaches and seas; futuristic skyscrapers stand next to ruins that date back to the Bible; great wealth and luxury is flaunted alongside poverty stricken nomads. No longer shrouded in mystery, it’s the introduction of airlines such as Emirates, Etihad and Qatar Airways that have lifted the veil on this area so to speak, and introduced it to the Western world as a tourist destination.
Ground transportation between countries in the Middle East is fairly limited and best done by plane. For shorter journeys, there is an international bus system; however the most comfortable means of transport is to hire a private car and driver – not as expensive as it would be to do the same in the West.
Cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi are easy single destinations to spend a week – wander around shopping centres, relax by the hotel pool, bargain in the souks or take day trips to explore interesting sights outside the city centre. If you’d like to experience one or two countries and get to know them well, there are some great tour companies that operate in the area offering tours that cater to different tastes and budgets. An easy and enjoyable way to explore what can otherwise be a slightly difficult continent to travel stress-free on your own.
As far as exotic and experience-filled holiday destinations go, the Middle East is difficult to top for its accessibility, diversity and culture – all available within a broad range of holiday budgets.
