Situated along the river of the same name, Ottawa is a reflection of the beauty that the rest of the country offers. Its skyline is modest and dotted with the charming peaks of its many 19th century buildings that contribute to its small-town atmosphere. It’s packed with things to see and do and is an interesting mix of contemporary construction and more classic architecture.
A scenic stroll along Ottawa River to the stunning buildings of Parliament Hill in the central area of the city is a great way to orientate yourself, take in the scenery and explore some of the neo-gothic architecture Ottawa enjoys. Make your way to the lovely Rideau Canal and sit waterside in the sunlight, or, if you are visiting in winter, throw on a pair of ice skates and join in a national pastime.
Wander around the delightful Byward Markets, one of Canada’s oldest and largest public markets best seen on a weekend. It’s home to the local farmers’ markets, artisans’ stalls, restaurants, nightlife and entertainment venues, shops and boutiques and more. Don’t be fooled by its unimpressive façade, the interior of the Notre Dame Basilica is simply stunning and exhibits a grandeur stolen straight from the old cities of Europe.
If art and design tickle your fancy, the striking contemporary architecture of the National Gallery of Canada is a must see, as well as its collection of modern and classical works.
For the history buff, Ottawa is home to the Diefenbunker – Canada’s interesting Cold War Museum and bunker filled with secrets and stories that you can explore yourself or have presented to you on a tour. One of the best ways to enjoy Ottawa however is by bike. Pick one up and soak in all the beauty that Canada’s capital has in abundance.
