Journey from Reykjavík to the remote southwest coast of Greenland, where spectacular glaciers, towering icebergs and little-visited fjords create an unforgettable Arctic adventure. Explore colourful local communities, uncover fascinating Norse history, and gain insights into Greenland's unique geology, wildlife and cultural heritage through an enriching onboard science program.
Wild Nature & Traditional Communities
Cross the Denmark Strait and discover some of Greenland's most remote regions. Visit traditional settlements, explore UNESCO-listed heritage sites, uncover ancient Norse ruins, and learn about the enduring cultures of the Arctic peoples.
Wildlife & Ice-Sculpted Landscapes
Experience Greenland's breathtaking natural beauty as you cruise through dramatic fjords framed by rugged mountains, witness cascading tidewater glaciers, marvel at sparkling icebergs, and keep watch for whales and other Arctic marine wildlife.
The journey begins in Reykjavík, Iceland’s vibrant capital city.
A relaxed hub of art, culture and history, Reykjavík is well worth exploring. Guests may wish to stroll along Laugavegur with its boutiques and outdoor shops, admire the striking Hallgrímskirkja Church, or visit the fascinating Reykjavík Art Museum.
Those with additional time may choose to discover some of Iceland’s natural highlights before the expedition begins.
Days 2-3 – Crossing the Denmark Strait
In the Wake of Vikings
The voyage sails across the Denmark Strait to Greenland, following the route once taken by Erik the Red, the Viking credited as the first European settler of Greenland. Whales are sometimes spotted along the way.
During the two-day crossing, guests will have the opportunity to become acquainted with the ship and its facilities, while the Expedition Team presents insightful lectures on Greenland, Arctic wildlife and the protocols for respectfully visiting fragile natural environments and Indigenous communities.
This is also a chance to relax and unwind, enjoy delicious meals, attend engaging presentations, and soak up the anticipation as Greenland, or Kalaallit Nunaat, draws closer.
Days 4-7 – Expedition Days in South Greenland
Get Straight into Adventure Mode
The next four days are spent exploring the spectacular fjords, channels and islands of South Greenland. Local weather and ice conditions will determine the itinerary, allowing the Captain and Expedition Team to select the best locations for exploration.
Landings and excursions may include visits to Norse ruins, picturesque towns and magnificent fjords filled with sculpted icebergs. Guests may explore the colourful settlement of Qaqortoq, visit Erik the Red’s farm at Brattahlíð, and marvel at the dramatic mountain scenery of the southern fjords.
Southern Greenland's rugged mountains rise above green meadows and deep fjords, creating a landscape shaped by ice and weather over billions of years. Once home to Norse settlers, the region now offers a remarkable sense of tranquillity and a unique opportunity to learn about its fascinating history and natural environment.
Days 8-10 – On Expedition in Southwest Greenland
Fjords, Glaciers & Ghostly Mining Towns
The remote coastline between southern Greenland and Nuuk is one of the Arctic’s wildest regions. Towering mountain ranges, massive ice-covered landscapes and deep turquoise fjords define this rugged environment where nature remains firmly in control.
As the expedition continues north, guests will explore the landscapes of the former Norse Middle Settlement. There may be opportunities to visit the abandoned mining town of Ivittuut, once renowned for its cryolite deposits and now inhabited primarily by musk oxen.
The voyage also ventures into spectacular fjords carved by ancient glaciers. Wildlife is abundant in the region, with chances to spot seabirds, nesting colonies, whales and, with luck, musk oxen along Greenland’s west coast.
Days 11-12 – Into the Depths of Nuuk Fjord
Be on the Lookout for Wildlife & History
Explore the magnificent Nuup Kangerlua fjord system, where interconnected waterways wind through dramatic mountain landscapes beneath the Greenland Ice Cap.
This area was once home to the Norse Western Settlement, the northernmost region colonised by the Vikings during the Middle Ages. Throughout the fjords, remnants of Norse settlements sit alongside small Inuit communities, some abandoned and others still thriving today.
Weather and ice conditions permitting, the expedition will explore deeper into the fjord system, visit local villages, cruise through pristine waterways and seek opportunities for nature landings, expedition boat cruising and wildlife viewing.
Day 13 – Nuuk
The End of the Expedition
Arriving in Nuuk, Greenland’s capital, guests bid farewell to MS Fridtjof Nansen, the Expedition Team and fellow travellers.
Compared to the remote settlements visited throughout the voyage, Nuuk offers a fascinating glimpse into modern Greenlandic life. Following time in the city, guests will fly to Copenhagen for an overnight stay, taking home unforgettable memories of Greenland’s extraordinary landscapes and cultures.
Day 14 – Copenhagen
Take Another Look at Denmark’s Capital
The journey concludes in Copenhagen.
Guests may reflect on the interconnected histories of Denmark and Greenland while enjoying additional time in the Danish capital. Those with time before their onward journey may choose to further explore the city’s attractions or visit one of its nearby beaches before heading home.
