German Fairytale Christmas

Travel to the baroque city of Würzburg, the starting point of the Romantic Road, and explore the Altstadt (Old Town), where Christmas markets are scattered among the historic buildings. Continue to nearby Rothenburg, one of Europe's finest medieval cities, for a two-night stay. 

The afternoon is free to discover Rothenburg's charming cobblestoned streets, ramparts and turrets. A visit to the famous Christmas Shop is highly recommended. The Christmas Markets, tucked within the narrow alleys just steps from the hotel, are among the most picturesque in Germany. This evening, following dinner at the hotel, enjoy a special torchlight tour through the historic streets and ramparts with the Night Watchman.

Enjoy a full-day excursion beginning in the UNESCO World Heritage-listed city of Bamberg, home to hundreds of historic buildings, mansions and palaces showcasing over 1,000 years of architectural history. Renowned for its distinctive smoked beer and antique shops, Bamberg is one of Germany's best-kept secrets.

In the afternoon, continue to medieval Nürnberg, famous for its imposing stone towers and gates. Once the setting for Nazi rallies and the War Crimes trials, Nürnberg is now known for its extensive pedestrian precincts and spectacular Christmas Markets.

As dusk falls, festive music, sparkling lights and the aroma of mulled wine, roasted chestnuts and traditional treats create an unforgettable atmosphere. Return to Rothenburg in the early evening.

Travel south to Munich, the capital of Bavaria, arriving late morning. Rebuilt after the war, the city centre is lively and vibrant, with excellent shopping opportunities, traditional cafés and famous beer halls. Christmas Markets can be found throughout the historic centre.

Continue mid-afternoon to the picturesque town of Füssen for a five-night stay. Stretches of the original Roman defensive walls remain intact, while the cobbled Reichenstrasse showcases the town's rich history. Overlooking the town is the former castle of the Prince-Bishops of Augsburg.

Traditional Christmas Eve dinner, a Farewell to Bavaria dinner and two lunches are included during the stay.

Visit the fairytale Neuschwanstein Castle and enjoy a guided tour of the King's apartments, staterooms, halls and throne room, all evocative of a Wagnerian operatic masterpiece.

This afternoon features a visit to the richly decorated Wieskirche (Church in the Meadows), renowned for its magnificent painted interiors. This evening, enjoy a traditional Christmas Eve dinner at a local restaurant.

Celebrate Christmas Day with a relaxing and memorable experience in the Bavarian countryside. A highlight of the day is a cable car ride to the summit of Tegelberg, offering breathtaking views over Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau Castles.

Christmas Day lunch is included at the hotel, followed by a scenic horse-drawn carriage ride through the surrounding countryside.

Visit the charming Passion Play village of Oberammergau, famous for its beautifully painted buildings and traditional atmosphere.

Continue to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany's premier ski resort, with time to explore at leisure. Before free time, visit the impressive ski jump and stadium made famous in the film Eddie the Eagle.

This afternoon includes a visit to Linderhof Palace, the lavish French Rococo masterpiece created by King Ludwig II.

Travel through the scenic mountains and valleys of western Austria to Vaduz, capital of Liechtenstein. Continue into Switzerland and spend the afternoon exploring the beautiful lakeside town of Luzern, known for its covered wooden bridges and stunning alpine setting.

A farewell dinner is included at the hotel this evening.
